Community, Nature and Woodlands Walk

Location: South Coast, Tel: 1-876-955 8834

Tour Description:

If you enjoy a short walk in beautiful surroundings with fantastic views over wooded mountainsides and coastline far below, then this is the tour for you. Our journey begins at Belmont beach, where fishing has been a way of life since the Taino Indians, over 1400 years ago. After a welcome drink, we move by vehicle through Sea Grape, walking towards the historic Bluefields Police Station. We pause to look briefly at Bluefields Great House, inhabited by Henry Morgan and Captain Bligh, who planted Breadfruit here in 1793.

Passing Oristano Great House, we make our way through the community at River Top to our starting point beside the first Salvation Army HQ in the Caribbean. Our easy walking route starts at around 400 feet and follows a well-defined old parochial road that winds gently up the hillside. We pass through shaded woodlands and learn about medicinal herbs and their uses. The sound of birds fills the air and brightly cultured butterflies are seen at every turn. We pause briefly to enjoy the view over Bluefields Bay, its coral reef set in aquamarine and turquoise seas. It’s like a picture postcard – except it’s real. Our next stop is at the western viewpoint where we look towards Sav-la-mar and Negril in the far distance. A little further on we enter the tiny woodland village of Belvedere (at around 900 feet), where the few remaining inhabitants still have no running water or electricity. All around, there are pimento trees and other fruiting trees. We hope to meet Bob, one of the villagers, and are invited to tour his little wooden house. It is as if time has stood still in this quiet corner of Jamaica.

After a short rest, we return slowly downhill to complete our two hour journey while listening to tales of local history from the Taino in 600AD to the present. Tours start at 9:00am and 3:00pm. The morning tour includes a swim at Bluefields or a refreshing dip in the Bluefields River and lunch.
